INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLON

The colon, also known as the bowel or the large intestine is a very important organ situated at the end of the digestive tract.  The bowel is connected to the small intestine at one end and the rectum at the other end.

The  bowel (colon) is divided into several parts: the appendix, the ascending colon, the transverse colon, the descending colon and the sigmoid colon and the rectum. The anus acts as a valve which is under voluntary control. In total the bowel is said to be between 3 and 11 feet!!!!

The bowel is smooth muscle, which is not under our conscious controll. Ideally a healthy colon should empty at least once in 24 hours, however this is often not the case. If longer or slower then constipation, IBS or other digestive problems can occur including bloating and discomfort.

The major function of the colon is to absorb water, nutrients, and salts from the partially digested food that enters from the small intestine. Contractions move the contents slowly back and forth but mainly toward the rectum. During this passage, water and nutrients are absorbed into the body. What remains is stool. A few times each day, strong muscle contractions move down the colon, pushing the stool ahead of them. Some of these strong contractions result in a bowel movement.

There is a lot of discussion about how often it is healthy to have a bowel movement.  The reality is that the number of bowel movements a person has ranges from several times daily to possibly only once or twice a week. Many people would agree that Idealy there should be at least one bowel movement a day and that movement should be easy to pass. If this does not happen then it can lead to a whole host of symptoms including bloating and discomfort.

The benefits of colonic irrigation can often be felt very quickly are are numerous. After a treatment many people comment that they feel great, lighter, less bloated etc. Also the colon is more able to absorb nutrients. Lastly colonic irrigation is not habit-forming.

 IS COLONIC IRRIGATION SAFE?

  • The water is filtered and at low pressure so there is no danger of perforation.

  • Equipment used is only used once and is disposable.

  • Although large numbers of friendly bacteria are expelled during treatment, they very quickly breed back up to strength. Some clients like to take a pro biotic supplement after the treatment.

  • Colonic hydrotherapy is not habit-forming
